Home Shows

Inspirations: A blog about my life as a decorator, what inspires me and makes me smile.

I’ve been neglectful of this blog. Yikes. But I was reminded today that home show season is right around the corner so….let’s blog about that! There is so much building going on in our area that the local home shows are a great way to reach out to potential clients. People are searching the aisles for products, ideas and local vendors. With a professional, eye catching booth you can reel them in, talk about your services and start designing! There really is no downside to doing the home shows except sore feet. I’ll live.

Maximalist

Ok, ok I confess.

As a decorator inevitably when I’m talking to people about what I do, they ask me what my style is or my favorite style in which to work. I find myself hesitating and saying that I like many styles or elements of an aesthetic; Mid-Century Modern, white walls and bold rugs, or whatever the zeitgeist is at the time… a cop out, really. Although I love these styles and appreciate Mies Van der Rohe’s “less is more”, it is not my personal mantra. Mine is “more is more”.

Maximalism is beautiful, intentional chaos. Bold colors and layered patterns make me very happy. I love mixing time periods and textures. My mother taught me that books and plants make a room. Nancy Mitchell said it very cleverly in Apartment Therapy in 2014: ”You are a maximalist if you have a collection of collections”… yes, raises hand, that is me. Who needs a place for the eye to rest? Not me, not if they are moving around the room soaking in a feature wall of bold wallpaper, or ceiling to floor symmetrically placed large scale artwork, or the fully-stocked bar or bar cart with sparkling glass bottles and colorful vintage barware.  My eyes are happy absorbing the eclectic mix of furniture, pattern and color that tell stories of joy and living life.

There are many great maximalist designers, but my personal favorite right now is the fashion designer Christian Siriano. His Instagram is fabulous. When he posts new pictures of his summer house I squee. It is my favorite kind of joyful maximalism: bold colorful Ikat print drapes, and a pair of painted bamboo etageres on either side of the fireplace. I’ve lost count of the fabric patterns in the main room, and that is perfect. There are vintage and antique furniture pieces covered in bold stripes and florals and wonderful large colorful paintings.

And dogs! LOVE. Yup, I confess I am a maximalist.

On Trend: Natural Elements

ON TREND: NATURAL ELEMENTS

Many of the style and color trends happening right now are inspired by natural elements. The big color trend is all of the grays, mist to slate. Also stone beige and taupe, rich wood tones in cherry, walnut and even champagne blonde in a nod to the mid century modern trend.

Bamboos, woods, rushes and grass cloth are made into woven wood roman shades and vertical drapes. Rich wood floors, cool stone tiles even porcelain tile that looks like wood are all on trend right now. Chrome, brass and brushed aluminum fixtures, blinds and drapery hardware introduce rich metallic into your décor.

Natural textured linen fabric is still very popular, in any color, but especially in the gray and beige neutrals. Happily contrary to that trend I’ve even seen a few modern floral chintzes introduced in the latest fabric collections! Truly bringing the outdoors in.

Natural elements, perfect for your Florida home and lifestyle.

Kabuki

Inspirations: A blog about my life as a decorator, what inspires me and makes me smile.

I am completely charmed by this new collection of fabrics from Villa Romo.  It is titled Kabuki.  The motifs are beautifully articulated and the colorways vintage glamor. The two stand out fabrics for me are the simple, classic velvet stripe and the silk embroidered lantern pattern, amazing design. LOVE.

The What I Did On My Summer Vacation Post.

Inspirations: A blog about my life as a decorator, what inspires me and makes me smile.

Every summer I am lucky enough to visit family and friends in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The cabin we stay in is on the St. Mary’s River and has a wonderful view of the constant river traffic, whether it be Canadian Geese and Osprey or the truly awesome lake freighters traveling up and down the river.

One of my favorite activities in the Soo in the summer is going on the treasure hunts, aka  hitting all the garage/estate sales every weekend.  (Actually the sales start on Fridays, this is hardcore rummaging.)  Bean and I choose to do the 20 hour drive to Michigan so we can load up the car with our fun, must have finds. Past summers we have procured vintage poker tables, collections of vintage cocktail glasses and wall mounted steer horns (love). This trip proved to be just as successful.  Treasures from this summers hunt include His and Hers embroidered linen hand towels, crusty old bottles I will use as vases and the best find, 7 mid-century Leg-O-Matic wooden folding chairs!

They are fantastic, they need refinishing and new fabric for the seats but I love them. What great extra seating that stores away beautifully. With research I discovered that they were the chairs furnished with the Air Stream campers back in the day.  Best thing… I paid $5.00 for them, not each, but $5.00 for all 7. Ha.

As with any good hunt there is always the one that got away.  My Mom and her friend Bev (my favorite hunting companions) found this set of Atomic Z lamps the week before I arrived!  Bev scooped them right up.
I am still green with envy….
